EURLSSG (European Restless Legs Study Group) met in Munich on 9-10 December 2011

The EURLSSG members meet every year during two days in December in Munich to exchange ideas and and present new results. Members are European researchers and clinicians interested in RLS. The United States are usually represented by Professor Richard P. Allen from Baltimore, MD, who is RLS specialist doing mostly iron research. EARLS was represented by Mrs Joke Jaarsma and Mr Sten Sevborn.
The 2011 meeting was sponsored by Roche (Madopark®/Restex®), Mundipharma (Targiniq® och OxyNorm®), Pfizer (Lyrica® och Neurontin® ), UCB (Neupro®), Vifor Pharma (Ferinject® och Venofer®) and XenoPort (Horizant®).
Unfortunately the two companies selling most RLS medicines - Boehringer Ingelheim (Sifrol®) andGlaxoSmithKline (Adartrel®) - are not longer interested to support this important gathering despite the good profits the still have from the RLS patients because of activities from RLS patient organizations and some doctors devoted to RLS.
The program featured 28 lectures, brief 5-minute lectures followed by discussion.
Some of the highlights:

  • Prevalence in new studies invariably points to high incidence of RLS

  • RLS is not related to increased mortality

  • Prevalence differencies between countries cannot be explained by genetics only; a lifestyle study is called for (e.g. influence of nutrients and sesonal variability)

  • Hypoxia (oxygen deficit) in calves muscels could be related to RLS. Futher study will be done.

  • RLS is characterized by:

dopamine increase (PLMS's)
glutamate increase (hyperaraousal)

  • MRI scans can pick up ferritin-bound iron

  • Botulinum toxin (Botox®), was experimentally tested on RLS patients but was not found to be effective

  • Irone: 500 mg ferrocarboxymaltose had a rapid and immediate effect on RLS symptoms within days
